"BYOB" is the third episode of the first season of the streaming series Ballard. It premiered on Prime Video on July 9, 2025.
Plot Summary[]
Ballard is assigned a cold case involving the 2006 death of college student Nick Thatcher, who fell from a fraternity balcony. His sister Raquel has reignited public interest through a viral campaign accusing the fraternity of a cover-up. Nick’s girlfriend Meredith, who admits to pushing him after discovering that he had written some unflattering things about her. Meanwhile, the team continues to probe the motel maid murder and the John Doe case. Samira Parker discovers that the bullet from the John Doe case has mysteriously vanished from LAPD property, suggesting internal sabotage.
Plot Narrative[]
While surfing, Ballard reflects on her late father and the emotional weight she carries. Her foster mother Tutu surprises her with a “BYOB” surfboard kit—a nod to the boards she and her dad used to build together. Ballard declines the gift, signaling she’s not ready to unpack those memories. Meanwhile, Samira Parker tends to her ailing father, hiding her return to active duty. Ted Rawls secures a new client for his security firm, and Colleen Hatteras finds solace in church. These quiet moments contrast with the storm brewing at LAPD headquarters.
Ballard is summoned by Captain Berchem, who’s under pressure from the Chief over a cold case that’s gone viral. Raquel Thatcher has accused a fraternity of covering up the death of her brother Nick, who fell from a balcony in 2006. The case was ruled undetermined, but Raquel’s social media campaign has reignited public scrutiny. Berchem wants Ballard to contain the fallout. She’s also told to put the Pearlman case on the back burner, despite new leads suggesting the acting coach’s alibi may be false. Ballard resists, knowing the coach died two years ago and that exhuming his body could yield DNA evidence—but also political blowback.
Ballard and Laffont attend a fraternity reunion, targeting the weakest link among the alumni. They meet Joey, who reveals the existence of a “Body Count Book”—a crude scrapbook of Polaroids and ratings of women the fraternity members slept with. Ballard finds the book hidden near the site of Nick’s fall. Interviews with former students reveal a disturbing culture of misogyny. Some women recall being curious about their ratings, while others express regret. The book becomes a symbol of reputational violence—how women are judged, labeled, and discarded.
Ballard and Parker interview Meredith, Nick’s girlfriend at the time. Ballard senses Meredith is carrying a heavy emotional burden. Gently, she draws parallels between Meredith’s pain and her own, explaining how women often bear the consequences of male cruelty. Meredith breaks down and confesses: she pushed Nick off the balcony in a moment of rage after discovering what he wrote about her in the book. The confession closes the case, but it’s a hollow victory. Ballard sees herself in Meredith—both shaped by betrayal, both forced to carry the weight.
Back at the office, Martina spots a photo of Yulia, the motel maid murdered previously. Colleen vows to find Yulia’s family in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Samira discovers that the bullet from the John Doe case has been removed from LAPD property. Ballard warns her to stay quiet and focus on passing her firearm requalification, but the implication is clear: someone inside the department is sabotaging their investigation.
