Bruce Carlin was a private investigator working for Jerry Vincent. He had formerly been an LAPD detective. He had known Judge Mary Holder for many years, and she used him to approach Vincent about planting a "sleeper" on the jury. When the deal was made he delivered the bribe money to Holder. After Mickey Haller took over Vincent's cases, Carlin carefully avoided talking to Haller. First he asked for $200 per hour, then he asked for a flat fee of $10,000, leading Haller to decide that he didn't need Carlin. This allowed Carlin to keep a very low profile, but in the end it wasn't enough. When the whole scheme came to light, Carlin was indicted by the Grand Jury along with his co-conspirators.
