The Data Evaluation and Theory Unit, also known unofficially as "the DEATH Squad," is a division of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Since 2009, the Death Squad has been digitizing archied murder books in an effort to create a massive database of easily accessible and comparable information about unsolved killings.

In 2012, Malek Pran linked an open case from 2007 to a case from 1999 by way of a common witness, Diane Gables, and contacted detective Harry Bosch, who had submitted hte `99 case for synthesizing. He later linked an open case from 2006 to a case from 1999, and contacted Cliff O'Toole at the Open-Unsolved Unit with the information, which was again passed on to Bosch.
