Dawn Ruth is a Special Agent with the L.A. field office of the FBI. She is partnered with Rick Aiello. She is the senior partner. On Monday, January 13, 2020, the two agents went to the home of Mickey Haller in response to a subpoena that Haller had delivered to their Westwood office. They told him they would not be testifying, and they warned him against bringing the FBI into his murder trial.

Two days later, Ruth and Haller talked on the phone. Haller tried to impress upon Ruth the need for her testimony in his upcoming trial. She did not respond positively at that time, but later she gave Haller a copy of an arrest report for Sam Scales from Ventura County. The report supported Haller's argument that Scales was involved in a criminal enterprise with federal implications.

In February Haller served Ruth with another subpoena. She met with him secretly to tell him that she would not testify, but she gave Haller enough information for him to understand why Scales was killed.

On Thursday, February 27, Ruth and Aiello attended a meeting at the District Attorney's office to determine the final disposition of Haller's case. Also in attendance were Haller, Maggie McPherson, Dana Berg, John Kelly, Matthew Scallan, Wilson Corbett, Judge Warfield, and a couple of others. Ruth had little to say, and she appeared to be fine with the decision to drop all charges against Haller.
