EZ Bank is a chain of check-cashing stores in southern California owned and operated by Maxim Boiko. Because of the amount of cash held at each location, they are frequently the target of armed robbers.
In 1993 a branch was targeted for robbery by Larry Phillips and Emil Matasareanu. They had somehow connected with a woman working in the bank, Ana Maria Acevedo, who assisted them in the robbery. She also told them how to start a fire in the Bonnie Brae apartments to distract police while they robbed the store. The robbers escaped with $266,300. The case was investigated by LAPD detectives Gus Braley and Jimmy Corbin, but they were never able to clear it.
