Esteban Hernandez is the guitarist in Los Reyes Jalisco, a four-man mariachi band working in Los Angeles California in the mid-2000s. In addition to Hernandez, the band featured Orlando Merced on vihuela, Angel Ojeda on trumpet, and Alberto Cabral on the accordion.
On 10 April 2004 he and the other members of the group were in Mariachi Plaza when Orlando Merced was shot. Surveillance video of the scene showed that Hernandez reacted first with confusion before taking cover. This was distinctly different from Ojedo's reaction. Ten years later, after Merced died, Hernandez was interviewed by cold case detectives Harry Bosch and Lucia Soto who were looking for Ojeda. He told the two detectives that Ojeda had been with the band only nine months and he left soon after the shooting. He said Ojeda had gone to Tulsa, OK to work in a bar called El Chihuahua.
