"Haystacks" is the second episode of the first season of the streaming series Ballard. It premiered on Prime Video on July 9, 2025.

Summary[]

Ballard investigates the murder of a motel maid that may be linked to a previous cold case, while political pressure and internal resistance mount.

Plot Narrative[]

Renée Ballard is called to the Sunbeam Motel, where a maid named Yulia has been found murdered. The scene is grim but deceptively simple. Detective Neylon dismisses it as a robbery gone wrong. Ballard isn’t convinced. She quietly enlists Samira Parker to help investigate off-books, suspecting a connection to the John Doe case.

They review motel surveillance footage. Though grainy and incomplete, Ballard spots a man lurking near the scene. She captures a still image and begins canvassing nearby businesses. At a local salon where Yulia worked part-time, the manager identifies the man as a frequent visitor. Fearful of immigration consequences, the staff are reluctant to speak, but Ballard’s persistence yields a name.

Ballard takes the recovered bullet to Firearms Freddie, the eccentric but brilliant ballistics expert. He confirms the gun used in Yulia’s murder matches the one from the John Doe case. But something’s off—key data from the original case has been deleted. Ballard suspects internal tampering and warns Samira to tread carefully.

Meanwhile, Councilman Jake Pearlman confronts Ballard. He’s furious she’s linking his sister Sara’s murder to other cases, especially Yulia’s. Ballard pushes back, revealing that Sara may have known Laura, another victim. Pearlman’s certainty about the suspect Brian begins to waver.

Ballard visits Laura’s mother, who shares a haunting memory of her daughter’s final days. The emotional toll drives Ballard to a therapy session, where she opens up about her past—an attempted rape by a fellow officer and the betrayal of her former partner Chastain, who failed to back her up. These scars fuel her relentless pursuit of justice but also isolate her.

Outside the therapist’s office, Ballard is harassed by a vulgar comment from a uniformed officer. She doesn’t react immediately, but the moment lingers. Later, she’s seen being tailed by a man in a pickup truck, adding a layer of unease to her already fragile trust in the system.

Back at the office, Ballard and Samira begin assembling a case board. They connect Yulia’s murder to the John Doe and possibly to Sara and Laura. The pattern is emerging, but the evidence is thin, and the resistance—from within the department and from political forces—is growing.

Ballard’s team is still unofficial, but the stakes are rising, and the threads she’s pulling are starting to unravel something much larger than a single murder.
