The Hotel Usher was an abandoned 13 story building from the 1930's. It was located at 41 Highland Avenue near Hollywood Boulevard. In 2002 it was due to be remodeled as part of redevelopment of the general area. In the meantime it was occupied by a variety of squatters, especially drug addicts and people hiding from the police. Johnny Stokes hid on the top floor after being released by the police in connection the the murder of Arthur Delacroix. On Saturday, 12, January, 2002, Stokes was killed there by officer Julius Edgewood .
