Summary[]

Teaser[]

Ballard reopens a mysterious John Doe case while pursuing justice for a councilman’s murdered sister. As she navigates reluctant witnesses, department politics, and her own demons, Ballard and her team uncover buried secrets that suggest corruption within the police force.

Plot Narrative[]

The episode opens with Renée Ballard chasing a suspect through the streets of Los Angeles at night. The suspect fires at her, and she returns fire, ultimately subduing and arresting him just as her partner, Thomas Laffont, arrives. The next morning, Ballard and Laffont are interviewed by internal investigators about the shooting. Laffont warns her that the brass is looking for a reason to shut them down.

Despite the scrutiny, Ballard reports to work at the newly formed LAPD Cold Case Unit, which she leads. The team includes Laffont, Colleen Hatteras, Ted Rawls, and Martina Castro. They celebrate closing their first case, but Ballard quickly shifts focus to a new one: a John Doe murder from 2020, where the victim was found dead and his infant child went missing. The case is cold, with no leads and no cooperation from the original officer.

Councilman Jake Pearlman and Deputy Chief Nelson Hastings arrive unannounced. Pearlman, who helped establish the unit, pressures Ballard to prioritize the unsolved 2001 murder of his sister, Sara Pearlman. He believes a man named Brian is responsible. Nelson threatens to dismantle the unit if Ballard doesn’t deliver results. After they leave, Ted reveals he’s friends with Pearlman and was likely placed on the team to monitor her.

Ballard visits Samira Parker, the original officer on the John Doe case, who left the force under mysterious circumstances. Samira is reluctant but hints that someone in the LAPD covered up evidence—specifically, an altercation before the murder that was scrubbed from the record. Ballard invites her to the office to review the case files.

Later, Ballard tells Laffont she wants to recruit Samira. The next day, Samira arrives and meets the team, insisting she’s only there to help. She offers new insights into the John Doe case. Meanwhile, Martina brings in documents related to Sara Pearlman’s case, which catches Samira’s attention.

Laffont notices a palm print recovered from Sara’s crime scene. Ballard hopes to extract DNA from it and takes it to the lab, where she persuades Darcy, a lab tech, to expedite the analysis. Darcy agrees, impressed by Ballard’s integrity in exposing a corrupt cop.

The episode ends with Ballard juggling two cold cases—Sara Pearlman’s murder and the John Doe case—while navigating political pressure, internal skepticism, and the ghosts of her department’s past.
