Melissa Mencken was a child psychology student at USC, and worked as a receptionist for Dr. John Locke.

In November of 1993, she met LAPD detective Harry Bosch when he visited to speak with Dr. Locke. On the weekend that civil rights attorney Honey Chandler was murdered, Mencken and Locke had traveled to Las Vegas.
