Officer Pepin, nicknamed "The French Dip," was a policeman with the Los Angeles Police Department, and Harry Bosch's first training officer. They walked a beat together from the Hollywood Station to Hollywood Boulevard, then to N. Bronson Avenue, making a U-turn at Bronson and walking to N. La Brea Avenue, then back to the station, probably along Sunset Boulevard. Somehow they managed to make this route last an entire shift. He made a habit of stopping at an ice cream shop called Dips near Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street.

The one slur Pepin absolutely refused to tolerate being called was "pig." If kids driving by called them pigs, Pepin would get their license number of issue them a parking ticket.
