Raymond Torres is the son of Gloria Torres, the nephew of Graciela Rivers, the cousin and adoptive brother of Cielo McCaleb, and the adoptive son of Terry McCaleb. He was always small for his age and not particularly athletic, although he tried. He preferred to go out fishing with his adoptive father. Terry allowed Raymond to go up in the tower of the boat to search for fish, and he became quite good at that.
