Wilson Corbett is U.S. Attorney for the central district of California. In 2019, prosecutors in his office were investigating the operations of BioGreen Industries for possible fraud in receiving federal subsidies for processing biodiesel fuel. His office worked closely with FBI agents Dawn Ruth and Rick Aiello, but Corbett himself was not directly involved in the investigation until it came to a head in early 2020. At some point Corbett was informed that a murder trial involving Mickey Haller threatened to make their investigation public. Although details are sketchy, it appears that Corbett contacted L.A. District Attorney John Kelly to see if a deal could be made to protect the federal investigation.
A meeting was held on the morning of February 27 in the District Attorney's conference room. In attendance were Kelly, Haller, Judge Warfield, Maggie McPherson, Dana Berg, Matthew Scallan, Dawn Ruth, Rick Aiello, and a couple of others. The outcome of the meeting was agreement that all the charges against Haller would be dropped and he would be given full exoneration. Corbett said little during the meeting, so it is unclear whether he agreed with all aspects of the deal. However, his first priority was to protect his investigation, and he was willing to go along with whatever Kelly decided regarding Haller.
